About Dante Notes
Dante Notes is a digital space in which new research and pedagogy projects related to Dante are featured. In keeping with the original mission of the Electronic Bulletin of the Dante Society of America (EBDSA), and widening it to include pedagogy, student work, and Field Notes from around the world, this venue hosts peer-reviewed projects and scholarly notes in a digital space with no barriers to access, ensuring additional prominence and wide availability to all readers. With this evolution of the EBDSA, our desire is to continue to encourage discussion and debate among Dante scholars by publishing new work that deserves a first airing. Since our digital format allows the editorial board both to respond to and to publish submissions quickly, publication is possible more rapidly than in any forum devoted to Dante of which we know.
Submission Guidelines
The primary output of Dante Notes is scholarly notes of about 1500 words that may be a first foray into a new research area, a short work of public-facing scholarship, or a one-off piece that wishes to take advantage of the digital format. Submissions for the Scholarship section are accepted via email to the editor Akash Kumar ([email protected]). For submissions for the Pedagogy, Student Encounters, and Field Notes sections, please contact the Director of Education and Outreach, Elizabeth Coggeshall ([email protected]). All pieces are evaluated by the full editorial board, and we typically turn them around within two weeks. For any questions, please reach out to the editor.

In memory of Giuseppe Lo Manto (1950-2020), known to all simply as “Pippo” – an inspiring high-school teacher from Sicily who founded the annual Settimana di Studi Danteschi – a member of the Dante Society has offered to recognize an outstanding contributor to Student Encounters by supporting a complimentary year of membership. Recipients of the annual “Pippo Lo Manto membership award” are noted next to their entries.

Field Notes is a joint initiative between the Dante Society of America's Education and Outreach Committee and the board of Dante Notes. Each "field note" highlights the work of one of the many scholarly and/or public-facing societies dedicated to the study of Dante and his works around the world. We have asked the leaders of these societies to lay out the philosophical or theoretical orientation of their group, what they have achieved and hope to achieve, and how they see their position within the larger fields of Dante scholarship and Dante fandom. With this, we hope to showcase the many ways there are to be a researcher, teacher, and fan in this big-tent field.
For more information or to propose a field note, contact Director of Education and Outreach Elizabeth Coggeshall ([email protected]).
